Terra Firma Chambers Sponsors 2011 Rural Law Conference

Terra Firma Chambers are proud to announce their sponsorship of the 2011 Rural  Law Conference on ‘Sustainable Rural Development’ at the University of Aberdeen.

The conference, which takes place at the University’s King’s College campus on the 1st and 2nd of September 2011, is the second to be hosted by the Rural Law Research Group, and follows on from the success of the inaugural conference on land reform in Scotland in 2009.

The 2011 conference will, however, be a notable first in its consideration of issues of sustainable rural development following the publication of the Scottish Government’s land use strategy earlier this year. ‘Getting the Best from Our Land: A Land Use Strategy for Scotland’ is not just the first land use strategy ever to have been published in Scotland, it is thought to be the first strategy of its kind anywhere in Europe, and so, as the organiser’s themselves note, this truly is an exciting time to consider sustainable rural development in Scotland.

In addition to providing sponsorship, Terra Firma is pleased to announce that four members of Chambers will be speaking over the course of the two-day event. On Thursday 1st September, Luise Locke will discuss the key challenges facing agriculture as part of the Agriculture and Forestry parallel session, and Iain Maclean will chair the parallel session on Hunting and Animal Welfare. On Friday 2nd September, Robert Sutherland will consider the key legal challenges surrounding crofting reform, whilst Stuart Gale QC provides the keynote address on Rural Land Use and Planning.

Emma Potter, Terra Firma’s Practice Manager, said: “I am delighted we are sponsoring Aberdeen University’s second Rural Law Conference, having lent our support to the first conference in 2009. The conference programme, spread over two days, closely reflects our own practice areas and I am delighted that, as well as providing financial support, we are able to provide speakers over such interesting areas.”

For the full programme and to register for this event, please visit the University’s Rural Law Research Group website at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/rural-law/featured/sustainable-rural-development-2.
