Biography:
Prior to being admitted to the Bar, Rory was a solicitor for about 12 years, from 1982 until 1988 being the sole litigation partner in Messrs. Menzies Dougal and Milligan, W.S. He called to the Bar in 1989 and took silk in 2000. In 1992, he was made standing Junior to the Department of Employment, but does work for a number of other Departments, having conducting, for example, a number of planning inquiries for the National Roads Directorate as well as judicial reviews in immigration cases.
His main areas of interest/expertise are:
- Professional Negligence: In particular Medical Negligence; this represents a large part of his practice.
- Land law: In particular, Agricultural and Crofting law. He has appeared on a number of occasions in both the Lands Tribunal and Land Court, as well as providing Opinions in agricultural and crofting matters. He recently drafted the Faculty response to the White Paper on Land Reform, and has conducted a number of cases in the Lands Tribunal in connection with compulsory purchase acquisitions.
- Rating and Valuation: He has been instructed by a number of Assessors, and regularly acts on behalf of the Lothian Assessor before both the Committee and the Lands Valuation Appeal Court.
- General Commercial work: At any one time he has a number of cases in the Commercial Court.
- Personal Injury: He is frequently instructed in relation to asbestosis/mesothelioma cases, having done these from an early stage in his career. He represented the pursuers in the case which effectively set the bench mark for the quantification of these claims.
