Energy

Most of the United Kingdom's hydrocarbon reserves are located in the waters off the Scottish coast. The North Sea is a mature oil and gas province but the pace of exploration and production activities has been maintained. This is reflected not only in drilling and production operations offshore but in oil sector mergers and acquisitions and in the scale of new industrial and residential development in and around Aberdeen.

Recent years have seen an increasing demand for alternative energy including wind, wave and tidal power. Environmental and sustainability considerations, concerns over energy security and the relentless upward spiral in global oil and gas prices have given added impetus to the development of alternative energy technologies and of power generation and transportation infrastructure. Scotland leads the United Kingdom in the alternative energy sector.

Members of Terra Firma Chambers have considerable practical experience in the field of energy law, covering the oil and gas sector and the renewable energy sector. This includes having acted as in-house counsel for one of the leading global energy services companies and as an external adviser to several international oil and gas companies. Their experience is not restricted to Scotland, with involvement in the energy sector in Norway, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Vietnam. They have been involved extensively in international arbitrations and adjudications within the UK and overseas, and have acted both as representatives and as arbitrators. In addition they have been involved in drafting joint venture agreements and have also been involved in patent cases, intellectual property disputes, various types of contract disputes, and employment related issues. They also have experience of Fatal Accident Inquiries involving the energy sector, health and safety prosecutions and numerous civil litigations in Scotland, England and elsewhere. Members of Terra Firma Chambers have represented parties in cases concerning the suitability of work equipment, and cases concerning oil and gas tankers and self-propelled installations, and shipping arrestments. Our members who specialise in this area include a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a member of the Oil and Gas Branch of the Arbitration Club, London as well as the Scottish Oil Club.
