A number of our members regularly advise on matters relating to tax. In respect of personal taxation, counsel can advise on matters such as inheritance tax planning, the drafting of wills, and the variation of trusts. Additionally, we can advise on income tax (for employees, on matters such as PAYE, and for the self-employed), as well as capital gains and stamp duty land tax. Our members regularly appear before the Special and General Commissioners and a variety of other courts on such matters.
In respect of business taxation, we can offer counsel experienced in advising on the tax issues pertaining to corporate transactions, including corporation tax and capital allowances, structuring deals, tax issues in share and business sale agreements, stamp duty land tax and partnership taxation. A number of our members have particular expertise in the taxation of financial services, the oil and gas industry, and property investment and development. We can also offer counsel experienced in advising on indirect taxation, such as VAT and customs duties. A number of our members regularly advise on VAT planning, particularly with respect to property transactions, and on VAT in the context of corporate transactions, and appear before the VAT and Duties Tribunal, and before the Court of Session on appeal.

We can also advise on international matters relating to trusts, residence and domicile of both individuals and companies, tax matters relating to foreign companies and dividends, and international treaties regulating double taxation.
